Latin may be classified a "dead language", but Latin is alive and well in universities (the world of academia), the renewed rule to allow Latin mass in the Roman catholic church (once the official language until Vatican II in 1965) and thousands of words in the English, among other languages (especially Greek, not related to Latin, but was a major colony of the Romans who borrowed the Greek civilization), came from the language.

Sometimes, I'm call myself a "pan-Latinist" or someone who feels the modern Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian (despite it's location east of the Adriatic sea) and other Latin-based languages are descendants or survivors of a great language once spoken by subjects of the Roman Empire about 1,500-2,000 years ago. When the empire collapsed in the 500s AD, Latin broke up and develop into new dialects and languages (the "vulgar Latin" reported in Celtic Gaul or present-day France), out of isolation.

Agree with Mike, Latin is techinically classified as a 'dead language', but it is used as a scientific names for plants, animals, diseases, etc. I know a bit, it's quite interesting.
